English A1

Before joining Good School Kovan, I used to struggle greatly in English, getting only a B3 for it in Secondary 1 end-of-year examinations. I thought that there was no structure to the subject, and it entirely depends on the questions in the exam. I thought that there was no way to study for it, unlike the sciences or mathematics. However, upon taking up lessons in Good School, I soon learnt about the logic models and the many answering techniques that could be applied to every comprehension passage that made Paper 2 a breeze for me, especially since their formulaic nature complemented my more logical way of thinking, and made me realise that English is a subject that actually has a fixed structure. My tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie, also invests plenty of time into learning grammar, a foundational tool that my teachers would skip. It allowed me to truly understand my mistakes instead of simply being told that I was wrong, and it also aided me in varying my sentence structure. He also makes lessons engaging and interesting by covering certain current affairs, showing us certain video clips such as the Toastmasters competition for an oral lesson, or demonstrating brilliant language use through an analysis of the Queen’s speech. Mr Tan provided comprehensive and constructive feedback on my work such as submitted essays or oral recordings, and offered support anytime as he would respond to queries even during the rest of the week via WhatsApp.I managed to get a 2-grade improvement and scored an A1 for my O Level English examination. I would highly recommend Good School to others as it offers a wide range of learning resources. Not only are the tips provided effective, but we are also constantly reminded of what we need to follow and this has led to steady and sustained improvement in my grades as well as my grasp of the language.

English C6 to A1

I never knew that there was a way to prepare for English and always thought that reading more would be sufficient. I would rely on my instincts and gut feeling when doing comprehensions. For the Sec 4 MYE, my grades for English was C6. After joining GSLH Kovan, I was able to study and practise English in a systematic way with the help of logic models, formulas and understanding the basics of grammar. The lessons Mr Tan Wei Jie teaches are engaging and since the class size is not very big, the attention he pays to his students is amplified. The examples and analogies he uses also makes it easy to understand new and difficult concepts. He makes it easy to clarify doubts after lessons, both physically and over text and is patient in explaining.I had a 5 grade improvement and scored A1 for my O level English. I would recommend GSLH because of the small class size, patient tutors and easy-to-follow method for learning Secondary English.

I would strongly recommend Good School Learning Hub to my juniors and other parents after seeing the huge jump in my Secondary English grades from a C6 to an A2.
Before joining Good School Kovan, I was lost on how to improve my English grade as the “mindless practicing” technique did not work on language subjects for me. Good School saved me by teaching me formulas my teachers never taught that dramatically improved my comprehension and essay marks. My tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie, would not only provide countless practices for these two areas, but would also target questions students commonly lost marks at. His in-depth explanations were easy to understand, allowing me to speedily improve. Even my speaking and reading skills in oral were brushed up through specific feedback given by him. My tutor would give suggestions on how to improve the pace, tone, and pitch of my recording which I found very helpful.
I view my tutor as someone who is able to strongly motivate his students while yet being an encouraging and kind educator. He praises students when they do well, sharing their successes and work to their peers so that they can also learn from each other.
Academics aside, I like how Good School lets students choose between online and in person classes. The environment at a classroom in Good School is also bright and air conditioned. Seats and a long desk are provided in the tuition centre for their students who prefer studying in a quiet and cooling place. After months of steadily improving English grades, I was not surprised when i saw an A2 for English on my O level result slip.

English A2

Before joining Good School Kovan, I didn’t know that there were specific techniques involved in essay writing and always freely wrote whatever that comes into my mind without thinking.I was unable to score well in the ‘Language’ aspect of continuous and situational writing. I was also constantly confused by certain question types in comprehension, which caused me to lose marks for the entire question. I scored a B3 for my mid year examinations in Secondary 2.
The lessons in Good School certainly opened my eyes to a new world of English as my tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie, taught me unique formulas to answer various comprehension questions and simple ways to identify question types. I was able to clearly tell the difference between the ‘Purpose’ and ‘Message’ of a visual text after attending lessons from Good School, while many of my schoolmates weren’t able to. Furthermore, I have benefitted from the sentence variety techniques that he introduced, along with the practices that allowed me to hone my skills. He also placed emphasis on descriptive essay topics, instead of solely focusing on expository topics, which allowed me to have a wider variety of essay topics to choose from. Mr Tan ensures that every student’s personal needs are attended to and addresses mistakes that are common throughout students’ work. Even during online lessons, he constantly engages with students to ensure that they stay on track, and is also open to clarifying my doubts after lessons through WhatsApp.
I scored an A2 for my O'level English. I would recommend Good School as I have developed greater fluency in my essays, which was my main concern, and also become more confident in answering comprehension questions.

English C6 to A2

Before I joined Good School Tampines, I was very unsure of the different writing techniques and comprehension question types. However after i joined, everything became much more simplified. The tutors was also very patient. My tutor, Ms Sarah Tan, would always be very patient in explaining to me my composition errors and how I could write it better. For example, the tutors would always give us very concrete and specific examples so that it is easier for students to comprehend. Without fail, my tutor was always very willing to help me mark my essays which was something I was very appreciative about.
For comprehension wise, Ms Sarah explained to us the different question types there were and always gave us ample practice so that we would know how to identify the question types during examinations which made it a lot simpler to answer the questions.
Another thing I like about Good school is the small group size which made it easier for the tutors to focus on our weakness and improve on it individually. Thanks to my tutors, my Secondary English grades were able to improve.

English C6 to A2

In Primary School, English was a subject I did not struggle with much since I use it every day. As such, I had a tremendous amount of confidence for English and clinched an A* for the subject in the PSLE. However, when I advanced to Secondary education, English as a subject became a whole different ball game; new sections such as summary as well as essay types were introduced, the vocabulary I possessed was extremely short of what was required, and thus the whole subject just became complicated and puzzling to me, pulling me down to a C6 during my Secondary two year-end exams.
That is when I searched and chanced upon Good School online.
Although the Centre is situated snuggly in a small corner in Kovan, but as the saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” When I first arrived at the place, it appeared to be a bit run down. However, inside Good School is so much different, like the contrast between black and white. With furnished floor, furniture, complete with cooling air-conditioning and even a mini snack store, I must say the environment was extremely welcoming. Even my tutor, was the humorous kind, and not before long I was on track with the class.
My tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie, has an extremely unique way of looking at the English language: through formulas. He used to share with us as a person who studied computing, that he wanted to incorporate Math into English to make it easier for us to tackle tough questions and essay topics. Hence, he created formulas as strategies for us to memorize to handle comprehension and essay questions, effectively and efficiently. He also shares with us hot news articles every class to help us build up our repertoire of current affairs knowledge in preparation for the expository and argumentative essays. Moreover, my tutor was also available round-the-clock for any queries I had about the lessons and to submit any essays I have written to further enhance my essay writing abilities.
As a result, I have him to thank for my stellar results of an A2 in my O'Levels, and I strongly recommend his classes in Good School if you want to have a unique perspective of English as a subject and yet ace your English examinations with style (literally).

ENGLISH C5 TO A2

Before Joining Good School Kovan, I was always confused about why I was scoring so low for English comprehension and I was unable to score for the summary passage.
I first joined during Secondary 2 as my mother assured me that this centre would help teach me specific methods to help me improve. This included SVOCA, logic model and formula for each specific question like inferential questions and language use questions. My tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie, was not only good at teaching but played a big part in motivating me to work harder. For example, he would send me reminders to do my homework and he would not scold me. I felt very encouraged to work hard instead of being forced to do better. I think my tutor really kept me engaged as he would have excellent pacing in class. I think for other teachers, when they go through lessons, they would only cause me to lose interest as they are either too fast or too slow. But thankfully, my tutor in Good School had good pacing in his class which suited me.
Without my tutor’s help, I would not be able to improve from a C5 to an A2 for English in my O'Levels. I would recommend Good School as the methods that my tutor taught were essential in me attaining an improved grade in my O Levels.

ENGLISH B4 TO A2

Before joining Good School Kovan, I was struggling to grasp how to do well in the English subject. I could not understand many of the English jargons that my school teachers used in lessons. I had always viewed English as a subject which cannot be studied for and scored a grade of B4 for my Secondary 3 end of year examinations.
The English lessons at Good School gave me a logical way to understand the basics of the language. I am able to study English predictably using the logic models taught by my tutor Mr Tan Wei Jie during our weekly lessons. Classes were always engaging, with fun activities that enhanced our learning. He is able to make an abstract idea really simple to understand. I feel that their lessons about essay writing is the most useful in allowing me to write more and fluently, with the use of different grammar rules to make my essays well tuned. Help from the tutor is always readily available in class as well as outside of lesson time via WhatsApp. There is constant and constructive feedback given on every piece of work done, allowing me to improve quickly, not repeating the same mistakes in the future.
I had a 2- grade improvement and scored and A2 for my O'level English examination. I would definitely recommend Good School to the people around me as the techniques taught, helped to tackle every component of the English subject, especially Paper 1, my weakest component.

English A2

Before joining Good School Kovan for Secondary English lessons, I was unaware of many critical skills and techniques required to answer comprehension questions as well as writing, to score well.
The pace in school was always too fast for me as my peers were generally more advanced, so the teachers simply went through papers after papers without giving detailed explanations and reasons. At the end of Secondary 3, I scored a B3 for my end of year examination.
Through Good School, I learnt various acronyms that helped me to study and improve my grades. They were easy to apply and once I got the hang of them, I was able to write more fluently. What I liked about my tutor’s lessons was the fact that he covered all the components of the examination in-depth. Mr Tan did not merely focus on the writing and answering aspect of the paper, he also put in effort to ensure that we were well prepared for the other portion of the examination like oral. For example, he made us send him our oral recordings and he would listen to them and give us individual feedback.
After less than 2 years in Good School, I scored an A2 in the GCE O-Level examination. I would recommend Good School because the tutors really put in effort into each and every one of their students.

ENGLISH C6 TO B3

Before Good School Kovan, I was very confused in English class. Most of the time, I would go with an answer because it sounded right. This caused my grades to fluctuate. Also, my perception of English at that time was that it was a very dry and dull subject. I was not very engaged in class and didn’t see the value in it.
For someone with a slower learning speed, Good School was the best possible help I could have gotten. The teachers are patient and incredibly devoted to helping their students. Good School helped me overcome the seemingly huge tasks of writing an essay or understanding a comprehension passage. In other words, break down intimating and complex assignments into easy to understand concepts. They told me the ingredients that made the difference between a mediocre essay and an excellent one. Methods such as show don’t tell, general to specific and WIIFM are some tools that help me fix my compo writing back comprehension.
The lessons had the perfect valence of being interactive and informative. It helped me see English in a whole new light. In my previous tuitions, I would focus on reading and memorizing model essays, but in Good School was the first time that I was analysing a speech from Queen Elisabeth and Martin Luther king. That made me see the importance and artistry of English and how words when placed intentionally and carefully can make change in the world we live in. It can unite and call people to action.
Other than that, Good School is just a great place with even greater teachers that helped me improve from a C6 to B3.

ENGLISH C6 TO A2

Before joining Good School, I never knew that English was a subject that I could study for. I always thought that I just needed to read and do more practices. I didn’t know that there were methods to answering comprehension questions. I was practicing blindly without knowing how to avoid the same mistakes or identify what was wrong with my answer. After attending lessons in Good School Kovan, I was able to study for English using the logic modelling method. Through my tutor's teaching, I was able to better understand what to look out for and how to present my answer to meet the criteria in the examiners’ rubrics. Mr Tan’s lessons are fun and engaging. He made learning English more interesting. Furthermore, I was able to get help from him outside of lesson timings as I could contact him via WhatsApp if I had any doubts on what was covered during lesson, or when I needed assistance for my school work. I had a 4 grade improvement and scored an A2 for my O'level English.

ENGLISH C5 TO A2

The problems I had with Secondary English was getting a deeper understanding of the comprehension passage, as I lacked vocabulary skills. Furthermore, some questions in the comprehension section would ask questions that required a deeper understanding of the passage. I also had a problem with my composition as I couldn't make my composition more interesting and engaging due to my lack of vocabulary. My teacher at school had an injury which caused her to be out of school for an extended amount time, so most of my English lessons in school were always conducted by different English teachers. They would always start teaching something and stop in the middle while the next teacher comes in and teach something new. So we always did things halfway and could never fully grasp each concept correctly.
The lessons in Good School were engaging as the teacher would frequently ask us questions. She would make sure we understood everything that was taught, so that after my lesson I would leave with a sense of assurance and understanding that everything was taught in detail.
My teacher in Good School Tampines, Ms Sarah Tan, gave me helpful templates, tips and notes such as the "PEEL" method, on how to answer some of the questions in comprehensions, and how to write a composition that was engaging yet interesting. She was always helpful and I would highly recommend her as she also made lessons interesting by going through with us current trending topics such as Covid-19. Even after class, she would send me work to do and take the time to patiently explain to me how to do it and go through extra topics outside of class time. Furthermore, even after my exams she recommended routes that I should consider based on my personality and abilities. She puts in extra effort to make sure that her students succeed and I am grateful to her for that.
For my N levels, I had a 3 grade improvement and scored an A2, I would definitely recommend Good School to my friends and juniors as the teachers are very caring and patient. They helped a lot more than I expected from a tuition teacher as I used to change tuition centres frequently since young, and they were the best help I have ever experienced. Thank you Good School.

ENGLISH C6 TO B3

Before joining the Secondary English class at Good School Learning Hub Kovan, I always had trouble crafting up essays, I would always miss out the key points of my essay and had never scored above a 20 for it.
Right from the first lesson, my tutor patiently answered all of my questions and encouraged me to utilise my creativity to address the essay topics from different angles. The essay techniques he taught such as the 3BIT and OCE diagrams, made my essay more flavourful and corrected the logic flaws that I once had in my essays.
I was pleasantly shocked when my essay for my school’s prelims obtained an A2 and this is a testament to my tutor, Mr Tan Wei Jie's teaching abilities and the quality education Good School Learning Hub provides.

ENGLISH C5 TO B3

I joined Good School Kovan when I was in Secondary 3. However, since I was not applying the different techniques and methods to answering the questions, I scored a C5 for my End of Year Examination in Secondary 3. It was only in Secondary 4 that I started to apply the different methods did I see an improvement in my results.
During Prelims, I obtained a B4 which a one grade improvement. Finally during O'levels, I scored a B3. When attending lessons in Good School and applying what they had taught me, I found myself able to answer the comprehension questions more accurately and securing the full marks for the question. I always had very limited vocabulary and often had trouble writing a compelling essay that would could uphold the reader’s attention, hence paper 1 had always been my greatest weakness. I even hated writing essays as I often got very low marks. But with the model essays that Good School provided, I was able to improve on my essays and make them more engaging for readers’ by expanding on my choice of words and following a certain structure to have more story flow smoothly.
I was able to get help from my tutor, Mr Tan, outside of lesson as I could contact him via WhatsApp to ask him for assistance when writing my essay. He is very helpful and is willing to answer and clarify any doubts or uncertainties I have. I highly recommend Good School to anyone as not only are the methods very effective, Good School has a very conducive environment and I find myself being able to concentrate and focus on my task very easily.
